foo_rubato ~ Foobar2000 Rubato BPM Analyzer

Detects the tempo of a track and which of Tango, Vals, Milonga it is – or none of the three – from the audio alone, without reading the genre tag.

The two answers are linked. The tempo a dancer taps is not a property of the audio by itself: a tango is tapped on the beat, a vals once per 3/4 bar, a milonga once per 2/4 bar, a reggae on the quarter note – under the skank rather than on it. So the rhythm is settled first and the tempo reported on the level that rhythm implies. Measured against 3,692 hand-tapped tracks the estimate lands within 2 BPM of the tap 88.7% of the time, which is about as close as the same person tapping the same track twice; rhythm classification is 93.6% accurate. docs/tango-analysis.md has the method and the full numbers, and docs/cortina-genres.md covers the cortina genres that were measured and left alone.

Originally written by Michael Balzer+Holger Stenger as BPM Analyser, but bpmcore engine was completely rewritten.

Pitch Playground ~ Intonation, Pitch, Rhythm & Tuning Training

Pitch Playground is a free, ad-free collection of simple tools for musical tuning, rhythm, pitch, and intonation ear training.

Tuning and reference pitches

Use the tuner to check the pitch of a note with your microphone, or play reference tones to practice matching and tuning by ear. The reference pitch is adjustable, so you are not limited to A440.

Pitch and intonation ear training

Practice hearing small differences in pitch and recognizing whether a note is sharp or flat. The exercises are intended to develop pitch discrimination and a more accurate sense of intonation without requiring perfect pitch.

Metronome and rhythm practice

Use the metronome for a steady beat while practicing, choose from common simple, compound, and odd meters, or tap a tempo to set the BPM by feel.

Simple by design

Pitch Playground is designed to be a small, straightforward set of music practice tools: open it, choose a tab, and start practicing. Works well on desktop and mobile.

Free forever

Pitch Playground will always remain free, ad-free, and without in-app purchases. To run this site locally, download and unzip the latest release, which can be hosted on a webserver like nginx or by directly opening index.html.

foobar2000 ~ foo_bookbar

Bookbar is a DSP component for foobar2000 (32-bit and 64-bit), designed for listening to audiobooks, podcasts and spoken-word recordings. It lets you smoothly change playback tempo, pitch and “tape speed”, and optionally enhances the sound (loudness leveling and speech intelligibility). The configuration window is fully accessible to screen readers (NVDA, JAWS).

Bookbar is a port of the Winamp plugin Bookamp to foobar2000.

GNOME Metronome ~ Keep The Tempo

Keep the tempo

Metronome beats the rhythm for you, you simply need to tell it the required time signature and beats per minutes.

You can also tap to let the application guess the required beats per minute.

A boilerplate template to get started with GTK, Rust, Meson, Flatpak made for GNOME. It can be adapted for other desktop environments like elementary.

Partiels ~ Audio Analysis Application

Partiels is an audio analysis application that allows you to explore the content and characteristics of sounds.

Features:

Partiels allows analysis of one or several audio files using Vamp plug-ins loading data files, visualizing, editing, organizing, and exporting the results as images or text files that can be used in other applications such as Max, Pure Data, Open Music, etc.

  • Windows, Mac & Linux support
  • Multiformat support
  • Multichannel support
  • Multiaudiofile support
  • Analyzing audio with Vamp plug-ins
  • Visualizing results as spectrogram, lines, and markers
  • Textual and graphical editing of results
  • Organizing and ordering analyses in groups
  • Exporting results to PNG, JPEG, CSV, LAB, JSON, CUE, REAPER & SDIF formats
  • Loading results from CSV, LAB, JSON, CUE & SDIF formats
  • Batch processing
  • Command line interface to analyze, export, and convert results
  • Consolidating documents for sharing

Alongside Partiels, a wide range of analyses based on audio engines developed at IRCAM and outside are ported to Vamp plug-ins. These plug-ins allow you to perform FFT, LPC, transient, fundamental, formant, tempo, TTS and many other analyses. You can also find a large number of analysis plug-ins on the Vamp plug-ins website.

aubio ~ Audio Labelling Library

aubio is a tool designed for the extraction of annotations from audio signals. Its features include segmenting a sound file before each of its attacks, performing pitch detection, tapping the beat and producing midi streams from live audio.

Because these tasks are difficult, we thought it was important to gather them in a dedicated library. To increase the fun, we have made these algorithms work in a causal way, so as to be used in real time applications with as low delay as possible. Functions can be used offline in sound editors and software samplers, or online in audio effects and virtual instruments.

Features:

aubio currently provides the following features:

  • digital filters
  • phase vocoder
  • onset detection (several methods)
  • pitch tracking (several methods)
  • beat and tempo tracking
  • mel frequency cepstrum coefficients (MFCC)
  • transient / steady-state separation
